The MCSO is an intricate organization with numerous specialized units and sections. The agency, led by Sheriff Paul Penzone and Chief Deputy Russ Skinner, operates with an annual budget of approximately $404 million, supporting a workforce of around 3,300 employees. Some of the units which make up the MCSO include;

• Aviation Unit: This unit boasts a fleet that includes two Bell 407 helicopters, one Bell 429, and two Cessna 206 airplanes. This unit plays an essential role in various policing activities, including surveillance, search and rescue operations, and rapid response to crime scenes.
• Patrol Unit: This unit performs routine patrols, responds to emergencies, and conducts preliminary investigations.
• Criminal Investigation Unit: Specialists in this unit conduct in-depth investigations for crimes that occur in the areas under the jurisdiction of the MCSO.
• County Jail Management: This section oversees the operations of the county jail, including the safety and well-being of inmates.
• Community Police Unit: This section collaborates with the community to maintain public safety and resolve local issues. It offers coverage during day and evening shifts and includes detective services for investigative cases.
• Cadet Program: Aimed at young individuals interested in law enforcement, the Cadet Program provides training and community service opportunities.
• Animal Care and Rehabilitation: This unique unit is dedicated to caring for and rehabilitating neglected animals, finding them loving homes.

The MCSO, a civilian police agency, was formed in 1871, making it one of Arizona’s oldest law enforcement agencies. Over the years, the MCSO has grown to accommodate the expanding population of Maricopa County. As of 2020, the MCSO operates with approximately 3,300 employees and a budget of $404 million, serving an area of 9,224 square miles with an estimated population of over 4 million. The agency provides law enforcement services to unincorporated areas of Maricopa County and even extends its services to other towns through contractual agreements, as seen in Guadalupe. Here, the MCSO ensures day and night patrol services, detective services for investigative cases, and community police services for non-emergency situations.

In addition to this, the MCSO has a Community Police Deputy system, enabling residents to reach out directly in non-emergency situations.
