Cleveland Division of Police

At the head of the Cleveland Division of Police is the city’s 41st Chief, Wayne Drummond. Chief Drummond has a long-standing career in law enforcement, having served in various units of the CDP since his appointment in 1989.

Major sections within the Cleveland Division of Police include:

• Administrative Operations: This section is responsible for the overall administration of the Division, ensuring smooth operations and coordination across all units.
• Field Operations: Supervised by the Deputy Chief of Field Operations, this unit is responsible for maintaining order and enforcing the law on the ground, working directly with the community.

• Homeland Security: This section is dedicated to ensuring the security of the city and its people from threats to national security.

Established in 1868, the Cleveland Division of Police has been a cornerstone of the city’s law enforcement efforts for over a century. Over the years, the Division has evolved, adapting to the changing needs of the community and incorporating new technologies and methods to improve its service.

In recent years, the CDP entered into an agreement with the United States Department of Justice in 2015 to implement wide-ranging reforms aimed at building community trust, enhancing officer safety and training, improving officer accountability, and upgrading technology.

For example, a recent partnership with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department was announced to bolster safety in the downtown neighborhood and entertainment districts in response to an increase in criminal activity.

The Division’s agreement with the Department of Justice serves as a testament to this commitment, laying the groundwork for a new era of community trust, improved training, and enhanced accountability.
