Port St. Lucie Police Department

At the helm of the PSLPD is the Acting Chief of Police, Richard R. Del Toro, Jr., who took over the mantle following the retirement of the previous Chief, John Bolduc, in April 2023. The department’s structure comprises various units, each playing a vital role in maintaining peace and order.

• Criminal Investigations Division: This division handles investigations into serious crimes such as homicide, as evidenced by the arrest of a murder suspect, Alan Dale Williams III, in May 2023.
• Traffic and Safety Unit: The unit is responsible for investigating traffic-related incidents, such as the fatal motorcycle crash that occurred in July 2023.
• Fire Investigation Team: This team works closely with the St. Lucie County Fire District to investigate fire incidents, like the fire on The Boardwalk at The Port District in July 2023.
• Community Policing Unit: This unit focuses on building strong relationships with the community. They often handle cases involving vulnerable citizens, such as locating missing persons, like the rescue of an 87-year-old man in June 2023.
• Narcotics Division: This division is responsible for combating drug-related crimes. Notably, they made the city’s biggest fentanyl bust in July 2023.

The PSLPD has seen significant changes since its inception. John Bolduc, who served as the police chief for more than 10 years since August 2012, joined the department in 1994. At the time, what is now Tradition’s thriving residential and commercial district was a ranch that he patrolled as a state wildlife officer.

In April 2023, with Bolduc’s retirement, Richard Del Toro, one of the two assistant chiefs, became the acting chief, taking command of the 371-person department, including 290 sworn officers, 68 civilians, and 13 animal control specialists. The growth and transformation of the PSLPD reflect the city’s rapid development.

The PSLPD maintains a strong and collaborative relationship with the local community. According to Bolduc, the community holds a high level of respect and admiration for the department, which has facilitated its law enforcement efforts. They show a particular concern for vulnerable individuals, as demonstrated by their efforts to find missing persons and their swift response to emergency situations.

The PSLPD also takes decisive action against crime in the city. They have made significant arrests for serious crimes, such as murder, and have been involved in substantial drug busts. Their work in traffic safety and fire investigations also contributes to the overall security and well-being of the community.
