Requesting Your Accident report Through TxDOT

The Abilene Police Department submits completed and approved accident reports to the Texas Department of Transportation. Police officers have ten days to complete and submit a crash report. Even if an officer from the Abilene Police Department responded to the scene of your car crash, you must request your report from TxDOT.

When visiting the Texas Department of Transportation website to request your report, you must provide the following accident details:

• Your full name
• Driver’s license/ID number
• Vehicle plate number
• VIN
• Date and location of the accident

An Abilene Police Department accident report may cost $8.00 to $27.00 depending on the length of the report.

Crash reports contain basic accident details such as insurance and registration information, license plate numbers, driver’s license numbers, witness statements and contact information, the time, date, and location of the crash, contact details for all parties involved, driver and passenger statements, and a diagram of the crash site. 

Other information found in a crash report includes:

• The full names and contact information for all parties involved in the motor vehicle crash 
• The reporting law enforcement officer’s opinion concerning who they believe was negligent and how and why the accident occurred.
• A diagram of the crash site 
• Insurance policy information 
• Driver’s license numbers 
• License plate numbers/vehicle identification number 
• Description of personal injury sustained in the crash 
• Description of vehicle damage/property damage 
• Witness statements and contact information 
• Citations issued or arrests made (speeding, reckless driving, DUI, DWI, failure to follow traffic safety laws, etc.) 
• Road and weather conditions 
• Basic details, such as anything that may have contributed to the motor vehicle accident, including road debris, an animal on the road, pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcycle, truck, broken or missing traffic signs or lights, etc 
• Actions of police officers 
• Accident type (scooter, Uber, truck, motorcycle, head-on collision, rear-end accident, rollover collision, scooter, pedestrian, etc.)

Eligible persons who can obtain a copy of a collision report include all parties involved in the crash, the parent or guardian of a minor, registered vehicle owners, insurance companies, and accident attorneys.

If you sustained injuries in a motor vehicle crash that was not your fault you may be filing an auto insurance claim or personal injury lawsuit. While a collision report cannot guarantee that you’ll receive compensation for your damages, it can help strengthen your claim and prove liability.
