Crash reports are legal documents that are filled out by law enforcement officers who respond to the scene of an accident.These documents contain basic accident information such as:

• The names and contact details for all parties involved
• License plate numbers
• A diagram of the crash site
• Driver’s license numbers
• Insurance information
• The date, time, and location of the accident
• Weather conditions

Crash reports also include details involving anything that may have contributed to a crash, including a traffic jam and other traffic issues, debris on the road, road closures, construction, faulty or missing traffic lights or signs, or an animal on the road. The reporting police officer will detail how and why they believe the accident occurred and which driver was at fault. They will also document any injuries sustained in the accident and vehicle damage.

Eligible persons who can obtain a copy of an unredacted traffic report include all parties involved in the crash, the parent or legal guardian of a minor, insurance companies, vehicle owners, accident attorneys, and law enforcement agencies.

For simple accidents, a traffic accident report should be available within seven business days following an accident. Accidents that involve fatalities, bodily injuries, or crimes, may be unavailable until a collision investigation has concluded.
