New Jersey State Police

The New Jersey State Police operates through different troop sectors divided into four main troops:

• Troop A covers Southern New Jersey, providing law enforcement and public safety to the southernmost residents of the state.

• Troop B operates in Northern New Jersey, ensuring peace and order in the northern region.

• Troop C handles Central New Jersey. Its coverage extends from the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean. The troop manages five road stations and oversees twenty municipalities in seven counties. It patrols significant highways like I-95, I-295, and I-195 and is in charge of crowd control and traffic assistance for sporting events at The College of New Jersey and Rutgers University.
• Troop D is responsible for patrolling the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, ensuring the safety of all motorists on these busy thoroughfares.

Each of these troops plays a pivotal role in enforcing criminal, motor vehicle, marine, and alcohol laws while providing a variety of public safety services.

The inception of the New Jersey State Police dates back to 1921, marking the establishment of a statewide law enforcement body for rural areas. It was the first Superintendent, Norman Schwarzkopf, who heavily influenced its organization and training, setting the high standards that the NJSP maintains to this day.

Over the years, the NJSP has evolved to handle not only general police services but also traffic enforcement, investigations, emergency management, and support for local law enforcement. The department manages criminal records and identification systems and also regulates certain commerce, including firearms ownership.

The NJSP extends its services beyond law enforcement and order maintenance, fostering strong ties with the community it serves. It collaborates closely with local law enforcement agencies, sharing resources, information, and expertise.

NJSP’s responsibility also includes disaster response and emergency management, making the department a crucial entity in maintaining public safety in adverse situations. Its jurisdiction extends to various functions, including patrol assistance and disaster response, creating a safe environment for the residents of New Jersey.

The department also engages in active communication and education with the public. For instance, they have introduced the “Citizens’ Academy” to educate the community about law enforcement, bridging the gap between the police and the citizens they serve. NJSP strives to foster an environment of trust, mutual respect, and understanding through these collaborative efforts.
